Indications:

TENS units may help treat the following symptoms:

Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS)

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) has been used to treat a variety of pain conditions. Success rates range greatly due to many factors including electrode placement, chronicity of the problem, and previous treatments. It is generally used in chronic pain conditions and not indicated in the initial management of acute low back pain. Documentation of greater than 50% reduction in pain with a treatment trial may help substantiate its true beneficial effects as opposed to a placebo response.

7 Amazing Benefits Of TENS Unit Therapy

Here are the top 7 reasons why.

What Is a TENS Unit Anyways?

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation is a nonpharmacologic treatment for pain relief. Using a low voltage electrical current, it safely and effectively can reduce pain, allowing you to live a better quality of life.

The TENS unit activates sites in the spinal cord and brain stem that utilize muscarinic, opioid, and serotonin receptors. This is with regular appointments, adequate dosing, and proper intensity.

For back pain, place the TENS unit electrodes on an area of skin over where there is some pain. Electrical Impulses travel along the nerve fibers, relieving pain immediately, also creating a “tingly sensation”. There is pain relief because the unit stimulates the nerves in the spinal cord, closing a “gate” mechanism which relates to pain sensation.

Nerve Retraining

Damaged nerves are not able to send or receive signals. This leads to difficulty to move and extreme pain. This also leads to a loss of movement, due to the fact of the pain when you try and move.

Endorphins are your body’s natural painkiller, and they’re released from the stimulation of the impulses. No better way to treat pain than to utilize the bodies own painkiller.

With enough time and treatments, the brain and nerve patterns are retrained by the impulse that triggers the client’s muscle.

Reduced Inflammation

With pain comes inflammation, which in turn, causes more pain. It’s like a lose-lose situation. Thankfully the TENS unit can help with Inflammation as well.

Numerous studies have discovered that the electric impulses can reduce inflammation located deep within the muscle fibers.

No Side Effects

Living a life of pain, unfortunately, means that you now deal with more pain in order to tolerate it. Pain medications are hard on the body, there are numerous harsh side effects;

  • Constipation
  • Drowsiness
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Dizziness
  • Liver failure
  • Digestive problems
  • Respiratory depression

It is an oxymoron to take something for pain, that in turn, gives you more pain. In other cases, some people actually become resistant to their medications, causing them to be less effective.

The TENS unit has been so effective, that some people have been able to stop their pain meds completely. Unfortunately, you can not use the unit if you have a pacemaker, infusion pump or implanted defibrillator. If you are pregnant, have epilepsy, or have any heart problems whatsoever, consult your doctor before considering a TENS unit.

Affordable

With physical pain, unfortunately also comes financial pain. The price of a lifetime supply of pain medications can be very costly.

These units used to be only in Chiropractic/therapy clinics, as they were very expensive. Now that they are more common, you can purchase one for your home and not have to leave your couch.

A small one-time purchase can help with a better quality of life, financially and comfortability.

Also a Massage

For people without pain, there are other amazing benefits to using a TENS unit. Many distributors are selling these units as massagers. Following a different pulse pattern, they provide a deep massage for the user.

You can change the intensity to massage the muscle internally. For anyone suffering from any type of pain, this is a very useful added benefit.

Super Easy to Use

Being an advanced medical device, the units are extremely easy to use. That being said, you can use them at home because they are so simple to operate.

Just simply place the pad on the muscle that needs stimulating, and the machine will take over from there. There is a dial for the intensity and some auto-programs that will do that work for you.

An Improved Quality of Life

When it comes down to it, all you want with pain management is a better quality of life. You want to get back to the activities that make you happy. Whether it be keeping up with your family, being active outdoors, or sleeping better.

You know your pain management is working well when you can say goodbye to pain medications, and start living the life you deserve.

Summary

The use of a TENS unit is economical, costing you much less than surgery or pain medications. You can use it easily, with no side effects, relieving both muscle and nerve pain. The use of the unit can help you get back to a better, more productive quality of life.

TENS (transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation

What is a TENS unit and does it work?

A transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) unit is a battery-operated device that some people use to treat pain.

TENS units work by delivering small electrical impulses through electrodes that have adhesive pads to attach them to a person’s skin.

These electrical impulses flood the nervous system, reducing its ability to transmit pain signals to the spinal cord and brain.

The same electrical impulses also stimulate the body to produce natural pain relievers called endorphins.

TENS units may help treat the following symptoms:

They may also alleviate pain that results from the following conditions:

  • A TENS unit has controls that allow people to administer an appropriate level of pain relief. People can achieve this by altering the following aspects of the electrical current:

Intensity: A dial allows the user to adjust the intensity of the electrical stimulation.

Frequency: The frequency refers to the number of electrical pulses per second. High-frequency (HF) pulses range from 80 to 120 cycles per second and may help manage acute pain. Low-frequency (LF) pulses range from 1 to 20 cycles per second and are suitable for the treatment of chronic pain.

Duration: The duration is the number of microseconds that the current enters the skin for during each pulse.

Although it is safe for most people, experts recommend that some groups of people avoid TENS treatment unless a doctor advises its use.

This recommendation applies to the following people:

  • Pregnant women: Pregnant women should avoid using TENS in the abdominal and pelvic regions.
  • People with epilepsy: Applying electrodes to the head or neck of people with epilepsy may induce seizures.
  • People with heart problems.
  • People with a pacemaker or another type of electrical or metal implant.

Due to a lack of high-quality research and clinical trials, researchers have not yet determined whether TENS is a reliable treatment for pain relief.

One study found that TENS treatment provided temporary pain relief for people with fibromyalgia while the machine was in use.

While there is a lack of strong clinical evidence for its effectiveness, TENS is a low-risk pain relief option for many people.

What is a TENS machine?

Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a treatment that administers mild electrical currents to the skin to relieve pain. A small, lightweight, hand-held, battery-operated device produces the electrical currents and lead wires send these currents to self-adhesive electrode pads that attach to your skin.

While using a TENS machine, you'll experience a non-painful tingling or buzzing sensation, and this can help to block or suppress pain messages. Two electrode pads are usually positioned either side of the area of most intense pain. This is done so that the TENS sensation covers the painful area.

Four electrode pads can be used to treat a larger area of pain. You'll be able to control the strength, (or ‘volume’) of the current that's passed through the electrodes, with a rotary knob or dial. Some machines have larger controls that are easier to use if your hand movements are limited.

Adjust the strength of the current until the tingling sensation from TENS is strong, but not painful. You'll also be able to adjust the pattern and speed of the current, so that the TENS sensation is as comfortable as possible. Many TENS machines are digital and have helpful pre-sets to help you choose the best settings for your pain.

Side-effects and risks

TENS has minimal risks or side effects if the following precautions are followed:

  • Check with your doctor or physiotherapist to make sure that using a TENS machine is a safe option for you.
  • Don't use a TENS machine if you have a pacemaker or other implanted electrical device. You should check with your physiotherapist that TENS is a safe option for your pain if you have epilepsy, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), heart problems, cancer or skin that is numb, irritated or fragile.
  • TENS can be used if you have these conditions, but you must seek advice from your physiotherapist or doctor first.
  • Generally, you can use TENS during early pregnancy, providing it isn't used over the abdomen or lower back. Again, you must check with your physiotherapist or doctor that TENS is a safe option for your situation.
  • Never place the electrodes over the front of your neck, over your eyes, directly on your head or in your mouth.
  • Don't use TENS when driving, using machinery, sleeping, or in the bath/shower.
  • Your skin may become slightly red and itchy when you remove the electrodes, but this should disappear quickly. It's important to monitor your skin regularly after using TENS, to ensure it remains healthy.
  • If redness, itchiness and soreness persist, then contact your physiotherapist, GP or pharmacist for advice. Some people develop a more serious skin reaction to TENS and may need to temporarily stop using it to let the skin recover.
  • If you intend to use TENS when flying, inform the airline first.

What is a TENS Unit?

A TENS unit is a battery-operated device that delivers low or high intensity electrical impulses through electrodes that you attach to the skin near the painful area. A TENS unit for back pain doesn’t treat an underlying spinal condition, but it may be a helpful in treating pain and other symptoms. Still, “for some patients, a TENS device may be all that’s needed,” says Stuart Kahn, MD, orthopedic spine surgeon at The Mount Sinai Health System in New York City.

What Does a TENS Unit Do?

“There’s still a lot of science we don’t understand,” Dr. Kahn says. But a TENS unit for back pain is believed to work on two theories:

  • On the low frequency, it stimulates larger diameter pain fibers so the brain doesn’t hone in on the pain generated from smaller diameter pain fibers. Known as the gate control theory of pain, “it’s a diversion technique,” Dr. Kahn says.
  • On the high frequency, a TENS unit for back pain is believed to work by releasing local neurotransmitters, such as endorphins, at nerve endings to block pain signals. The lesser of the two theories, “that’s very hard to prove,” Dr. Kahn says.

How Does a TENS Unit Work?

A TENS unit has adjustable settings to control the amplitude (or intensity) of electric stimulation by controlling the voltage. Current, and pulse width (duration) of each pulse. Electrodes are placed at specific sites on a user’s body depending on the physical location of their pain. The machine sends electrical current that travels through electrodes and into the skin stimulating specific nerve pathways to produce a tingling or massaging sensation that reduces the perception of pain. When a Tens Unit is used as directed, T.E.N.S. is a safe, noninvasive, drug-free method of pain management. A TENS unit is used to offer a better quality of life for people with pain.

What does a TENS machine do to relieve, decrease or eliminate pain?

There are two major pain theories to explain how a TENS unit works to relieve pain. One theory is called The Gate Control Theory and is the most advanced explanation. The gate-control theory suggests that there’s a neural mechanism in spinal cord that acts as a kind of gate, shutting down or opening up the flow of signals from the periphery to the brain. Whether the gate is open, closed or partially closed depends on what sort of signal it receives from the brain to change the perception of pain in the user’s body. These frequencies interfere with the transmission of pain messages at the so spinal cord level, and help block their transmission to the brain.

Another theory is called The Endorphin Release, which suggests that electrical impulses stimulate the production of endorphins and enkaphalins in the body. These natural morphine-like substances block pain messages from reaching the brain, in a similar fashion to conventional drug therapy, but without the danger of dependence of other side effects.

TENS machines are used by hundreds of thousands of pain sufferers all over the world for the relief of many types of physical pain from back to knee to neck pain. This is why hundreds of doctors, nurses, and patient technicians often recommend that their patients use a T.E.N.S. unit for minor and major pain relief. The most trusted source for medical information for doctors and health professionals is the Merck manual. The Merck manual suggests Tens Therapy for pain Relief.

Some common uses for TENS treatment are: acute and chronic pain, post op incisions and post surgical pain, labor, and delivery, migraine and tension headaches, acute pain from sports and other injuries, arthritis, chronic pain from tendentious and bursitis, cancer pain, and wound healing.
